Toothpaste Trouble

The CDC recently reported on the problems associated with swallowing too much toothpaste. What is really hard to swallow is the commentary posted on Medscape. The CDC warns about streaky or splotchy teeth if kids use more than a pea-size amount of toothpaste because of its fluoride content. Medscape does not mention fluoride at all. This is not surprising, given most doctors rigid belief that fluoride is harmless. This position is only tenable if significant data is ignored, which a true scientist will not do.

Rather than burden you with my views on this sensitive topic, I encourage you to do your own research. More than your kids’ teeth may be at stake.

Too many young children using too much toothpaste, research from CDC suggests

The AP (1/31, Stobbe) reports, “Too many young kids are using too much toothpaste, increasing their risk of streaky or splotchy teeth when they get older,” researchers from the CDC concluded “based on a survey of parents of more than 5,000 kids ages three to 15.” The study revealed that approximately “40 percent of kids ages three to six used a brush that was full or half-full of toothpaste, even though experts recommend no more than a pea-sized amount, the study found.” The findings were published in the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
