The State of Health Care
Don’t be shocked—it is not healthy because it has become a big, toxic business.
Its leaders, that is some doctors, insurance companies, and pharmaceuticals are presently more concerned about doing well than doing good, a historical tendency we are all guilty of. After all, “the business of America is business.”
I confess that as a young, naïve doctor I loved going to Jazz games, expensive restaurants like La Caille, and other fun venues on Big Pharma’s dime. At first, I prescribed the hyped drug, but, after a while, I stopped doing that while cynically going along only to have a good time. The last time I did that was fifteen years ago. I should have done it sooner. About that time, I also stopped seeing drug reps in my office.
Next time you wonder why our health care system is so dysfunctional, remember Deep Throat’s advice: Follow the Money.
