An article in the Scientist on June 29th 2017 showed that the pesticides neonicotinoids are killing our bees. This is hardly news; we have known about this for years. I tried to bring this to the attention of the Utah Medical Association but I was told there was no way doctors would get behind this life threatening issue: “too controversial.”
Why life threatening? Why controversial? Without bees many plants will no longer be able to reproduce. Of the 100 crop species responsible for providing 90% of food worldwide, 71 are dependent on bee pollination, according to UN estimates (pdf).
Are we going to correct this problem any time soon? Don’t hold your breath. Newspapers and TV bury this issue in the most obscure sections of their publications. The powers that be (Bayer, Monsanto), through their contributions to said media, are not going to easily reverse their claims that their pesticides are safe.
What can you do now? EAT ORGANIC. Remember that DEMAND drives SUPPLY.
BTW, all pesticides are neurotoxic; they have been implicated with Alzheimer’s, Parkinsonism, and ALS.
