The best treatment for depression is to come to terms with the factors that lead to depression. However, said factors may not be known, or amenable to change or treatment. So, we need to accept other ways to deal with depression. Counselling, hypnotherapy, biofeedback, exercise, diet, vacations may be as effective, if not more, as pharmaceuticals. We do well to remain open to emerging therapies, such as ketamine and pharmaceuticals that work on NMDA receptors in the brain.
And now we have very good evidence that Psilocybin from mushrooms is effective. If you are going to try it, find a legitimate therapist to help you in a safe, controlled environment.

“[Results] did not differ significantly between patients who received two doses of psilocybin and those who received daily escitalopram. Secondary outcomes generally favored psilocybin over escitalopram.”
