Twenty years ago, I xeriscaped my yard to the consternation of my neighbors. I also became active in the community to raise awareness of the drought in the West. It is particularly insidious in Utah where most people act like they have water to spare; no, to waste. Advocating for water conservation at a medical meeting, a doctor pushed back telling me that “water has nothing to do with health.” I was stunned, as you may be now. Did he skip the class where we were taught that our body is 70% water? Was he not aware that medicine is a social science?” (Virchow)
Walking around my neighborhood I often see water running down gutters from excessive lawn irrigation and broken sprinklers. I routinely turn those offenders in. We are in dire straits. I urge you to stop wasting water. For starters, get rid of your lawn if you live in a western state affected by the drought. Google John Oliver (June 26th 2022) making fun of Utah, the state consuming the highest amount of water.
